Hong Kong's Neon Signs

This article really interests me. When I lived in Taiwan, nearby Hong Kong was a weekend destination for me, and I recall how beautiful the lights were every time I went to visit my friends. It's unfortunate that things are changing so fast, however the point made about health and safety definitely resonates with me. https://amuse.vice.com/en_us/article/qvqzbv/hong-kong-neon-signs

Press Freedom Article

This article about the supreme court's ruling has me extremely disappointed. Media and journalism is being attacked from all sides and this is just another blow from the government, it seems. https://news.vice.com/en_ca/article/qvqzvv/supreme-court-rules-against-vice-in-press-freedom-battle-against-the-rcmp

2-Way Communication

Social media is still in its infancy. Our society still struggles with the ability to communicate effectively through it, often times straying from social norms and etiquette from the safety of their room. These "keyboard warriors" effectively communicate messages to mass audiences and display a lot of inappropriate behaviors. When someone retaliates against their message, it is easy for the keyboard warrior to block that transmission, whether through deleting the message all together or blocking the user sending it, it is easier than ever to ignore messages. I see this as a failed two-way communication style. It's upsetting to see behaviors like this so often, and yet it has become the norm in social media communication. Hopefully with the maturity of social media will come the maturity of its users as well.

Vision Project Video

In 2008, Professor Michael Wesch at Kansas State University created the video "A Vision of Students Today". At Camosun College, my classmates and I remade that video to reflect how we felt in 2018. Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOXLtKCAkdo&t=1s Enjoy!

Connected, but alone?

Sherry Turkle observes mobile technology with the clear eyes of an unbiased commentator. Her descriptions about it are disturbingly accurate and resonated strongly with me. Ever since I was in Middle School, mobile technology has been a staple in my relationships with friends and family. At times it connected us, at other times it inflicted damage on those relationships, and, at the worst of times, it deeply disconnected us. A future where human relationship with technology is recognized, understood and maintained at a healthy level, is the future we should all be striving for. https://www.ted.com/talks/sherry_turkle_alone_together#t-1168774
